Vincent Van Gogh at Montpellier

Towards the end of his stay, as there were tensions between the two men, Gauguin proposed to Vincent to go to Montpellier to visit the Fabre Museum.
Once again, they disagreed: “ Gauguin and I talked a lot about Rembrandt, Delacroix, etc… the conversation was stormy enough…” (Letter to Theo, December 88)
In a letter to Theo, Vincent told that event (564F), the paintings he saw and wished his brother had been there : “ How I wish you could see that Museum in Montpellier one day, there are most beautiful things.”
The portrait of Bruyas, collector, patron of the arts, close to Courbet, particularly moved him. He found an amazing likeness between the portrait and both him and his brother : “ it’s a red-haired, red-bearded man, who tremendously looks like you or me”.
It was back from Montpellier that the crisis with Gauguin burst out…
