Vincent had always
wondered about death and resurrection.
Copying Rembrants work, just before leaving Saint Rémy, he
represented himself (it was in fact his last autoportrait), under the
features of a Lazare brought back to life, apparently striving to get
up. Hes surrounded by two panic-stricken, almost frightened women:
I made three figures who are in the background of the etched Lazare
: the dead and his two sisters. The cave and the corpse are purple yellow
white. The woman who takes the hanky from the risen from the dead mans
face has a green dress and orange hair, the other has black hair and wears
striped clothes in green and pink. Behind them, a country, blue hills,
a yellow rising sun.
Was it him, the corpse and the risen from the dead?
