you must have often heard of peasants’ problems, and of their main foodstuff.
The potato disease devastated your native region... It was the main foodstuff
for Zundert small farmers.
Later, you fed on potatoes and bread only... What is considered to be your
first masterpiece is this picture... “The potato eaters”.
